An initial refurbishment of the Grade II* listed Heworth Hall was followed by a scheme for a sensitive contemporary extension to form the headquarters of a growing and ambitious tech company.
Our role as lead design consultant meant we were responsible for liaising with all statutory bodies for approvals, including Gateshead Council, Historic England, and Tyne and Wear archaeological department to achieve listed building approval.
The design of the extension takes its lead from the rhythm, proportion and material of the historic hall, re-interpreting these as a minimal and contemporary façade to strike a balance between old and new.
Particular care was taken to balance the historical value and features of the building with the M+E requirements of a 21st Century technology company. This was achieved through the preparation of an extensive visual and descriptive schedule of works outlining detailed retention and alteration of historical features prior to planning stage. This aided the securing of listed building approval and ensured a comprehensive provision of information to all consultants and contractor during the technical design and construction phases.
The project was highly commended in the RTPI awards.
